I cry when I watch sad movies. And I’m not ashamed to admit it.

Why do we cry when we watch sad movies anyway? The way I see it, a movie depicts life, and whenever we see something that we can relate to, and we relate it to our own lives, we get affected, and therefore we cry. Of course not all people cry during a movie. But a really good movie should be able to stir something up inside each of us, regardless of whether or not we cry as a result.

A friend of mine asked me this question the other night: What was the last movie that made you cry? I didn’t have a ready answer, I’m usually like that when asked to recall things. The more I try to remember, the less I remember. But anyway, afterwards, I did try to come up with at least 6 movies I’ve cried to in the past. And here they are:

A Walk To Remember - The story of this movie is just incredible. Some people might find it cheesy and predictable, but I don’t care. It probably rarely happens in real life too, but the thing is, the story is really touching. Imagine, having that special guy do all those wonderful things for you… even though he knows you’re dying. It’s like God really gave that girl Jamie an angel (in the form of Landon), because she was dying. And it even changed Landon’s life in the process. It’s love at it’s purest and unconditional state. It’s really heartwarming. I cry every time I watch that movie.

Stepmom - I love this movie. It’s about two women, a man, and two kids, all woven together in a story of love, family, respect and acceptance. The story is just like any other story, a guy gets divorced, finds another woman to love, and now the new woman has to prove herself to the kids, you know, stuff that pretty much happens in real life anyway. The twist in the story happens when the real mom is diagnosed with cancer and dies. My favorite bit, was when Susan Sarandon said, “I have their past, and you can have their future.” I couldn’t stop the tears, it’s really touching.

The Miracle Worker - I only saw this movie once, but I haven’t forgotten it since. It’s based on a true story, about the life of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan. The title really fits the movie, because it really was a miracle how Annie was able to teach the blind and deaf Helen, how to communicate. After all the struggles, frustrations, and disappointments, in the end, through love and persistence, Annie was able to break Helen’s walls. It’s a sad but beautiful story. I would recommend it to anyone. It has so much depth and it really pierces through the heart.

Patch Adams - This movie is also a tearjerker. Based on yet another true story, about a young medical doctor named Hunter Adams. Starring Robin Williams, a funny actor, but he proved he could do drama too with this movie, and he portrayed his role so well, it’s amazing. There are sad parts in the movie, but I cried during the courtroom scene… when he made that speech. “You treat a disease, you win, you lose… you treat a person, I guarantee you, you win, no matter what the outcome.” That’s an incredible bit of truth there.

Sweet November - I can’t really remember what particular scene I cried to in this movie, but I do remember that it has something to do with the plot. I think I cried towards the end of the movie, when the dying girl blindfolded the guy, and walked away from him saying that she didn’t want him to see her so weak and wasted. She wanted to be remembered as a fun, caring woman who loved life to the fullest, or something along those lines. I only watched the movie once, and that was a long time ago, so I can’t really remember all the bits. But I really liked the story and well, I did cry.

The Notebook - This is one of the most beautiful stories ever written. It tells of unconditional love and how it stands the test of time, no matter what. If you’re a girl, you probably have at some point in your life, dreamed of having this kind of love, am I right? Who wouldn’t want that kind of love, where even though you have Alzheimer’s Disease, he still stays by your side every single day, and loves you despite your condition. If that doesn’t make a girl cry, I don’t know what would.

I guess that’s about it! I tried to think of other movies to put here, but sadly, my mind wouldn’t cooperate anymore. How about you, do you remember the movies that made you cry?
